We live in a world where there are just too many things craving our attention from junk emails to social media notifications. Permit me to call it what it is – information overload. That said, it is very important to prioritise your life and make first things first, otherwise you may just wake up one day to find that you have been going round in circles in the grand scheme of things instead of making progress in your life. Without setting priorities for our lives, we unconsciously let things and others to set priorities for us.
The topic for this article came to my mind recently while in a bus, engaging in a conversation with two young beautiful teenage sisters who sat to my right and to my left. Even though they are Christians, they could not remember the last time they had been in church because according to them, their mum was so busy working every single day of the week and could not take them.

This got me thinking about what really counts in life and the main reason why we are here on the earth.
Don’t get me wrong. I understand that family life is very important and so is working more hours to provide for our loved ones to have every need met and even the wants such as treats, nice vacations, expensive presents, etc. However, life is short and transient and when you live life in the light of eternity, everything takes on a whole new perspective. Matthew 6: 33 says “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (NIV). Daniel 5:23 explains that it is God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny. Putting these verses together, I am sure you will agree with me that no matter what your school/work/ business/travel schedule is like, it is wisdom to prioritise God and His affairs as He’s the One who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny. You are put on this earth for Him and not the other way around. Don’t be too busy to attend church and play your part in His kingdom. If you sincerely have a RELATIONSHIP with God, then spending time with Him daily on your own and attending church programmes should be a delight.
I believe strongly that until we make God and His kingdom our priorities in life, we will maintain a very cluttered and disorganized life without knowing. Until you put God at the centre of your life and make our lives all about Him, things will keep falling apart and the (false) centre will not hold. Proverbs 16:3 says “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and He will establish your plans, (NIV).” How wonderful can that be! The very things we crave to pursue can be established or made ready by the One who is all-knowing and all-powerful and desires to be our “Numero Uno”.
In conclusion, I realise that as a young adult, there are already so many things calling for my attention and I am just getting started! If I learn early in life to keep the main thing the main thing and to prioritise my life beginning with each day, then as I go on in my journey, I will only experience the inner peace, joy and satisfaction of being surrendered to God and led by Him in every area of my life. You definitely want this for yourself too, so PRIORITISE!
